Vacancies offer civic involvement opportunities

Post Date:11/28/2018 4:06 PM

The City is seeking qualified, diverse candidates to serve on City commissions ranging from animal welfare to public safety. Click here to apply online

Commissions serve as advisory bodies to review City policy issues and provide policy recommendations to the City Council.

Multiple vacancies on 10 City commissions have created opportunities for residents to become more actively involved in their local government, said City Manager Stephanie DeWolfe. The commissions generally meet once a month in the evenings.

The City is interested increasing the gender and ethnic diversity of its commission appointments, said incoming Mayor Marina Khubesrian. For example, she said, about 38% of current commissioners are women.

“It would be great if we could get closer to a 50/50 gender representation,” Khubesrian said. “It’s important for us to have a diverse representation of ages, genders, ethnicities, neighborhoods and viewpoints on our City commissions.”

The City is also hoping to appoint younger commissioners to offer the Millennial Generation a stronger voice in local government, Khubesrian added.

All South Pasadena residents who are registered to vote are eligible to serve on a commission.

Applications are accepted online and in person.
