The City hosts and participates in a variety of Environmental Events.  Below are upcoming events.  If you would like city staff at one of your events, please contact environmentalprograms@southpasadenaca.gov.

 

LA County Smart Gardening Webinars

Join us for free webinars to beautify your home and garden. Webinars are approximately 45 minutes followed by a 15 minute period to answer questions and take orders for discounted compost bins. We offer these four subjects:

Intro to Composting: Learn the basics of using backyard and worm composting systems to create a rich soil amendment to nourish your garden.

Water-wise Gardening: Guidance on creating a beautiful drought-tolerant landscape, as well as grasscycling for responsible lawn care.

Organic Gardening: How to build healthy soil, grow fruits and vegetables, and address common plant pests and diseases using organic methods.

Small-space Gardening: Learn to grow edible and decorative plants in containers and set up a small-space worm composting system.

Virtual California Friendly and Native Plant Landscaping Training (CFNPLT) and

Turf Removal Classes

The Metropolitan Water District (MWD) has transformed its popular native plant and turf removal workshops to virtual classes. Classes are FREE and open to all. Register today!!

Introduction Videos 

There will be a 10-minute introduction video for the CFNPLT and Turf Removal classes.  Registered participants are encouraged to view the video prior to taking the class.  It will help the classes to move more efficiently since they are condensed.  The video covers the following:

PART 1: CFNPLT Intro Video: The introduction discusses a general understanding of the Watershed Approach to landscaping, and how it makes gardening easier.

PART 2: Turf Removal Intro Video: The introduction provides a brief review of planning with the Watershed in mind as well as performing a site evaluation and developing a base plan which would capture data on the following:

  1. Soil Health
  2. What Happens to Water
  3. Microclimates
  4. Irrigation Inventory

Furthermore, both recordings will provide links to:

  1. Landscape rebate page (SoCal Water Smart)
  2. MWD Guidebook: “Waterwise Gardens Designed by Nature”

PART 1 – CFNPLT Class

This first class covers the key principles of a CFNPLT in more detail. 

  • Building Healthy Living Soil
  • Capturing Rainwater
  • Selecting Local Climate Appropriate / Native Plants
  • Using Highly Efficient Irrigation

Part 1 California Friendly and Native Plant Landscaping Training

Part 2 – Turf Removal Class

The Turf Removal presentation assumes that participants have taken CFNPLT, or at a minimum, reviewed the Introduction. The class covers the elements of planning for a California Friendly landscape and reviews the steps for removing turf.
