Chief Joe Ortiz is 26-year law enforcement professional with progressive experience in the effective management and leadership of public safety services. Joe was appointed Chief of Police for the City of South Pasadena on April 1st, 2019. He came to South Pasadena after a 9-year career with the Sierra Madre Police Department, where he worked as a Sergeant, Police Captain and served as Chief of Police for the last 2 ½ years. Before the Chief arrived at the Sierra Madre Police Department, he spent the first 17-years of his career with the Glendora Police Department. While at Glendora, Chief Ortiz worked as a patrol officer, Force Options Instructor, Field Training Officer, Motor Officer, Detective, Traffic Supervisor, Explorer Advisor and member of the first Regional SWAT Team in Los Angeles County.
Chief Ortiz is a veteran of the United States Air Force/Air National Guard. He obtained his formal education to include a Bachelor’s Degree in Occupational Studies and Master’s Degree in Emergency Management Services, (both from California State University, Long Beach). Chief Ortiz is a recent graduate from the Executive Leadership Institute of Drucker’s Management School in Claremont. Chief Ortiz has been involved in law enforcement training throughout his career.
Chief Ortiz is a dedicated family man who has been married to his wife Shawna for 30 years. Together, they have been blessed with two sons and two grandchildren. Joe and Shawna live in the San Gabriel Valley.
