Subject: National Weather Service Issues a Red Flag Warning for Los Angeles County
on Wednesday, August 20, through Saturday, August 23

South Pasadena, Calif. — The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued a Red Flag Warning for Los Angeles County effective Wednesday, August 20, 2025 at 9:00 a.m. through Saturday, August 23, 2025 at 9:00 p.m. due to a combination of hot temperatures, low humidity, and gusty winds. These conditions create a heightened risk of wildfire ignition and rapid fire spread.

“Red Flag conditions mean that any spark can turn into a fast-moving wildfire,” says Greg Lloyd, Fire Chief, City of South Pasadena. “We urge residents to take this seriously and to use these days to prepare their homes and families. Your actions directly reduce the risk to the community.”

Recommended Preparatory Actions

For Residents and Businesses

  • Postpone yard work, welding, grinding, or other spark-producing activities until after the warning period.
  • Avoid open flames, including fire pits and charcoal grills. Use gas appliances only.
  • Do not park or drive on dry grass; secure trailer chains to prevent dragging sparks.
  • Clear roofs, gutters, and yards of dry leaves and flammable debris.
  • Move combustible items—wood piles, outdoor furniture, doormats—at least 5 feet away from structures.
  • Prepare a 'Go Bag' with essentials: medications, documents, water, clothing, phone chargers, and supplies for pets.
  • Identify at least two evacuation routes and make a plan for your household.

For Contractors and Landscapers

  • Suspend brush cutting, weed-whipping with metal blades, or hot work during the warning.
  • Keep extinguishers and a water source immediately available if emergency work cannot be delayed.

Stay Informed

  • Monitor official updates from the National Weather Service Los Angeles/Oxnard and the City of South Pasadena Fire Department.
  • Be aware that Red Flag Parking Restrictions may be enforced in designated areas to ensure fire engine access.

If You See Smoke or Fire

Call 9-1-1 immediately. Provide the location, direction of spread, and nearby landmarks.
