Athens Services

The City of South Pasadena contracts with Athens Services for waste collection services. For customer service, information regarding rental bins, or to request a bulky item pick-up, please call Athens Services at (888) 336-6100.

Holiday Schedule: Collection of residential rubbish will be delayed by one day on all major holidays. (Memorial Day, July 4th, Labor Day, Thanksgiving-both Thursday and Friday, Christmas and New Year's Day.)

SB1383 Rate Adjustment

On December 18, 2024, City Council approved a rate adjustment for solid waste services to accommodate compliance with State law, including Senate Bill (SB) 1383, the Short-Lived Climate Pollutant Reduction Act, which requires the City to provide organic waste services. On July 16, 2025, City Council approved an amendment to the waste agreement to add a third waste stream (recyclable materials) for further compliance with SB 1383 without any immediate increases to rates. The updated rate schedule, effective August 1, 2025, includes the same rates as approved in December with additional recycling services effective in August.

Annual Rate Adjustment

Waste collection rates are typically adjusted each year on July 1 to account for rising operational costs. However, as a result of recent contract negotiations between the City and Athens Services, the annual rate adjustments scheduled for July 1, 2025, and July 1, 2026, have been waived. This means customers will see no changes to their current waste collection rates until the next scheduled adjustment on July 1, 2027. Rates may change if current services are changed.

Water/Sewer

On Nov. 1, 2017, the City Council adopted new water and sewer service charges starting on Jan. 1, 2018, to pay for the operation and maintenance of the City's water and sewer systems. The water and sewer charges are scheduled to increase each year in January through December 31, 2022. Learn more about the Water and Sewer rate increases.

South Pasadena water customers are being served by a billing company, Munibilling. South Pasadena operates its own water utility staffed by City employees, but contracts for billing services.

Payments can be made by calling the automated payment line at (877) 556-7929, online, or by mail.
