The Library recruits a higher number of volunteers in the Summer (May-August) due to the annual Summer Reading Program (SRP). If prospective volunteers are not accepted in the Winter/Spring (January-May) or Fall (September-December) sessions, they are highly encouraged to apply for the Summer session.
SRP volunteers' main job is to interact with the public by recruiting them to sign up for SRP and administering prizes. They also assist staff with various projects, including:
- Cleaning books, toys, computers, and tables
- Dusting shelves
- Prepping crafts for story time
- Setting up and cleaning up for library events
- Filling book displays
Requirements:
- Volunteers must have completed 7th-12th grades by the summer.
- Sign-up for a South Pasadena Public Library card is highly encouraged but not required. (NOTE: A parent or legal guardian must sign their teen’s library card application)
- Volunteer a minimum of 20 hours during the summer. Volunteer shifts will be available seven days a week during most library open hours in June and July. Additional dates and times may be available, depending on the library's needs. A complete volunteering schedule will be made available on Sign Up Genius once volunteers have been accepted.
Application process:
- Summer volunteering recruitment is in March. At that time, applications will be made available on the library's website.
- All volunteers (new and returning) must complete and submit an application.
- New volunteers must be interviewed by the children's librarian.
- Returning volunteers are NOT guaranteed a spot.
- If applicants are not accepted the first time they apply, they are encouraged to try again.
