Teen Volunteer Corps

Teen Volunteer Corps

The South Pasadena Public Library Teen Volunteer Corps (formerly known as Teen Advisory Board (TAB)) is a group of teens dedicated to helping out and improving the library. Teens earn community service hours by assisting at volunteer sessions and events.

There are three sessions of teen volunteering:

  • Winter/Spring (January-May)
  • Summer (May-August): Please see the Summer Reading Program tab for more information on volunteering during the Summer.
  • Fall/Winter (September-December)

Projects include:

  • Cleaning books, toys, computers, and tables
  • Dusting shelves
  • Prepping crafts for story time
  • Setting up and cleaning up for library events
  • Filling book displays

Requirements:

  1. New volunteers must be in 8th-12th grades. Returning volunteers may be in 7th-12th grades.
  2. Sign-up for a South Pasadena Public Library card is highly encouraged but not required. (NOTE: A parent or legal guardian must sign their teen’s library card application)
  3. Volunteer a minimum of 10 hours each session. Volunteer dates will be primarily on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays (around 3:30 PM-6:00 PM), and some Saturdays at various times. Dates may change, depending on the library's needs. A complete list of dates and times will be made available on Sign Up Genius once volunteers have been accepted.

Application Process:

  1. Please click below to apply for the Fall/Winter 2025 volunteer session. The last day to submit applications is August 21, 2025. The application period may end early if a maximum number of applications are received.
  2.  All volunteers (new and returning) must complete and submit an application for each session they wish to participate in.
  3. New volunteers must be interviewed by the children's librarian.
  4. Volunteers are evaluated using the following criteria:
    • Reliability
    • Initiative
    • Punctuality
    • Ability to communicate effectively
    • Maturity
    • Integrity
    • Enthusiasm
  5. Due to the high volume of applicants, returning volunteers are NOT guaranteed a spot.
  6. If applicants are not accepted the first time they apply, they are encouraged to try again in the next session. More volunteer slots are available during the summer because of the library's annual Summer Reading Program.

Summer Reading Program

The Library recruits a higher number of volunteers in the Summer (May-August) due to the annual Summer Reading Program (SRP). If prospective volunteers are not accepted in the Winter/Spring (January-May) or Fall (September-December) sessions, they are highly encouraged to apply for the Summer session.

SRP volunteers' main job is to interact with the public by recruiting them to sign up for SRP and administering prizes. They also assist staff with various projects, including:

  • Cleaning books, toys, computers, and tables
  • Dusting shelves
  • Prepping crafts for story time
  • Setting up and cleaning up for library events
  • Filling book displays

Requirements:

  2. Sign-up for a South Pasadena Public Library card is highly encouraged but not required. (NOTE: A parent or legal guardian must sign their teen’s library card application)
  3. Volunteer a minimum of 20 hours during the summer. Volunteer shifts will be available seven days a week during most library open hours in June and July. Additional dates and times may be available, depending on the library's needs. A complete volunteering schedule will be made available on Sign Up Genius once volunteers have been accepted.

Application process:

  1. Summer volunteering recruitment is in March. At that time, applications will be made available on the library's website.
  2. All volunteers (new and returning) must complete and submit an application.
  3. New volunteers must be interviewed by the children's librarian.
  4. Returning volunteers are NOT guaranteed a spot.
